Hostgator sold out to EIG (Endurance International Group) - One of biggest news in 2012 probably.
The official statement is not out yet on the website but the wiki page of EIG mentions Hostgator as one of them.

The one more source is from WebHostingTalk

“Endurance International Group Inc., formerly BizLand,is one of the world’s largest website hosting companies. It achieved its size by acquiring a large number of smaller hosts, including iPage.com, FatCow.com, justhost.com, NetFirms, IPowerWeb, Bluehost, FastDomain, DomainHost, eHost, PureHost, HostGator and dozens of others, which it continues to operate under the original names. The company was founded in 1997and is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts.”

It has been reported that $225 Million USD were offered to Brent Oxley and he accepted the offer.

Thought it is said that no changes will be made in the staff, looking at the records of EIG it can not be guaranteed.

What we can do is just wait and watch what happens next..
